Chosin: X Corps Escapes the Trap, is a simulation of the fighting in eastern North Korea in late 1950 in which the Chinese attacked the UN X Corps as it approached the Yalu River. One of the more famous incidents of the campaign was the US Marine Corps 1st Division fighting its way out of an envelopment at the Chosin reservoir. Chosin covers the entire campaign. Chosin uses the same game system as Gauntlet, which appeared in Strategy & Tactics 190. The two games are compatible, and the Strategic Game scenario included in this issue provides instructions, as well as extra units, to create one grand campaign game of the entire Chinese offensive of late 1950. Players may also use the Chosin rules and charts to update Gauntlet. Unless otherwise stated, the rules supercede those of Gauntlet.

25 November 1042: As part of Operation Mars, the Soviet 238th Rifle Division, supported by tanks of the 49th Tank Brigade, attacked into the Luchessa Valley, trying to create a breach for the waiting 3rd Mechanized Corps to exploit. For reasons still unknown, right before the attack, the German 9th Army ordered three battalions the Grossdeutschland Division to move to the Luchessa Valley as OKH reserve, thus reinforcing the weak 216th Grenadier Regiment. Because of the presence of the Grossdeutshcland, the Soviets were unable to force a breakthrough and decided to commit the 3rd Mechanized Corps into the meat grinder to force the issue...

GD '42 covers the desperate battle for survival of the Grossdeutshcland Division as it faced down the entire Soviet 3rd Mechanized Corps (with more than 200 tanks) over several days. Designer Wig Graves conducted extensive research, combing both German and Soviet sources, to create the order of battle. The Soviets being with seemingly overwhelming force, while the Germans trade space for time and attempt to rush reinforcements to the front to plug inevitable gaps. While the Germans are primarily on the defense, careful counter-attacks against the relatively immobile Soviet formations can prove to be key to victory. And if the Soviets do not preserve their forces carefully, they will end with the historical result: stable German lines and an entire mechanized corps wrecked.

A burst of enemy fire from behind a hedgerow halted them just shy of a large farm complex. The American soldiers closed with their adversaries, engaging in a brisk firefight with rifles and grenades. One grenade, hurled a long distance, glanced off the helmet of an enemy soldier. The German leapt from his hide shouting, "kamerad!" In a matter of moments two dozen more Germans emerged from behind a hedgerow, hands in the air. The brief fight was over at the cost of three wounded Americans.

ASLComp First Wave at Omaha is a detailed new ASLComp variant that tells the story of the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach with incredible detail. The linking game maps stretch six feet across and depict Omaha Beach at a scale of 40-meters per hex. The detail is rich: every farmhouse, road and draw from Vierville to St. Laurent are provided as well as each German Stuetzpunkt.

The game cartography takes the American landing from Dog Green to Easy Green, with the Dog White and Dog Red landing beaches in between.
