This is Sparta! More than a line from a movie, The Spartan Army is the sixth expansion for the Commands & Colors: Ancients game system.

The Spartan Army expansion features 26 scenarios, which focus on a period of time from 669 BC to 331 BC. In the early battles of Sparta against Argive, we see the development of Hoplite armies. We then move onto the war with the Persian Empire and take a closer look at the battle of Thermopylae, 480 BC. During the Peloponnesian Wars, Sparta takes a leader position among the Peloponnesian states, which would last for almost two centuries. Finally there is a shift in power away from Sparta during the battles of the Theban Era and the rise of Macedon. The Spartan Army expansion also provides all the blocks and stickers needed to field a Spartan Army and its allies to oppose the armies from Commands & Colors: Ancients - Expansion Nr1 - Greek vs Eastern Kingdoms. As well as two sheets of 15 new double sided Terrain Tiles. Rules-wise, if you are familiar with Commands & Colors: Ancients, you'll have no trouble at all learning the special rules for Hoplite infantry, for the basic game mechanics remain unchanged. Battle dice still resolve combat quickly and the Command cards provide an element of luck that creates a fog of war and presents players with both challenges and opportunities for victory.

As with all Commands & Colors: Ancients expansion to date, the tactics you will need to execute with these Hoplite armies will conform remarkably well to the advantages and limitations inherent to these historical units, their weapons, the terrain and history.

Contents:
  • Rule/Scenario Booklet that features 26 historical scenarios
  • 4 Reference Cards
  • 258 Blocks (including spares)
  • Block Label sheets
  • 2 Terrain Tile Sheets: each contains 15 double-sided Terrain Tiles

Description
The Fast Action Battle (FAB) game series, designed by Rick Young (Europe Engulfed, Asia Engulfed and FAB: The Bulge), takes you now to the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943 for Volume II in the FAB Series.

As the Allied player, you will choose your invasion beaches after seeing where the Axis player has deployed his units. Do you choose Montgomery's historical HUSKY plan, Patton's alternate plan, or a hybrid plan of your own?

In Fast Action Battles: Sicily you will find a few new unit and asset types, and also new challenges for both sides. For the attacker, the challenge is the tough Sicilian terrain; and for the defenders, it's the worsening Italian morale.

Each victory area and functioning port that the Allies secure adds a Fading Italian Morale Event Chit into the selection cup, and as each of these are drawn, worsening effects on Italian units are felt along the entire Sicilian front.

Event Chits Includes: Replacements; Fading Italian Morale, the Patton Soldier Slap, and flanking battalion-sized invasions.

It's time to bring the war to the Italian homeland. Only now, YOU are in command. Can you do better than your historical counterparts? As the Allies can you make better use of your naval bombardments and increasing air Supremacy? As the Axis can you make better use of the rugged Sicilian terrain and delay the Allies long enough to unhinge their plans for striking the Italian peninsula? Play Fast Action Battles: Sicily and find out!

    Description
Barbarossa: Kiev to Rostov recreates the World War II campaign in the Ukraine, the southwestern part of the Soviet Union. This took place historically from mid-August at Kiev through early December 1941 at Rostov. Here, the Axis player faces the challenge of forcing Soviet armies into the greatest encirclement battle of history, known as the Kiev Pocket. It was not a sure victory but historically Axis troops captured Kiev and perhaps 665,000 Soviets. The Axis is then tasked with continuing on towards war-winning objectives in the industrial centres at Kharkov, the lower Don River basin, and Rostov, to take all in a timely manner and do this with very limited resources. The Soviet player must not only deny the German his objectives but also attack to begin the process of driving away the hated fascist invaders from his homeland.

Historically, Axis troops pushed east to capture Kharkov but could not advance much farther beyond. They even took Rostov but could not hold it. Can you as the Axis commander capture and hold these? Will only winter stop the Germans? As the Soviet commander, can you avoid the worst of the Kiev Pocket losses and throw the Axis armies out of the Soviet Union?

    Game Features:
    * Four 22" x 34" colour mapsheets including one back-printed with two scenarios
    * Seven scenarios (including the Learning Scenario) allow the players to vary their level of involvement, complexity, and starting point, from introductory to full campaign
    * An asymmetyrical sequence of play which highlights Axis armoured breakthroughs and Soviet difficulties in combined arms warfare
    * Detailed air rules which integrate with land combat and weather rules
    * Incredibly detailed Order of Battle, including artillery, rocket artillery, engineers, bridge units, armoured trains, and much more
    * Extensive bibliography and design/historical notes
    * Ability to link this game with other games in this game series

    Game Contents:
    * 1120 full-colour die-cut counters
    * Five 22" x 34" full-colour maps

    Description
Most people think of the Hundred Years' War as a battle over the geography and dynastic questions of who would rule which parts of France. The Hundred Years' War is known for sieges, sacking, lots of misery, a few large battles like Crecy and Agincourt, and famous leaders like the Black Prince and Joan of Arc. But naval battles?

Actually, the first significant action of the Hundred Years' War took place off the coast of Flanders in 1340. And changed everything. The French had been dominating the Channel, largely through the services of hired Genoese galleys. They sacked several English cities and spread terror and dissatisfaction (with Edward) amongst the population, halting the wool and wine trade, plus spreading the very real fear that the French might invade. This battle at Sluys was a decisive victory for Edward III that gave the English command of the Channel and insured that the rest of the war would be fought on French soil.

Place yourself in the decisions faced by Edward III or the French admirals as you decide who will rule the waves and perhaps rule France. But, if your expectations of the period centre on arrows, swords, and the deadly close-in fighting of armoured knights, Right Fierce and Terrible is still the game for you. One might almost ask, "Is it a naval game or a land game? And the answer is "both." Archery, ramming, grappling, and desperate melee are the tools of battle here, aimed at wearing away the enemy fleet's morale.

Bonus Game Included: All copies of this issue contain an extra solitaire game, Schwarm!, covering a small flight of Luftwaffe fighters trying to pick off a US bomber before it can drop its deadly payload on a German target below.

    Description
Welcome to the 'Nam. Welcome to Lock 'n Load, the tactical gaming system with More Game, Less Guff. Does fast paced, engaging, and exciting sound like what you've been playing? If not, it's time to try something new, something fresh. Lock 'n Load might be that something. Born of thirty years of gaming experience and an equal amount of frustration with dry-as-dust rules, this is the tactical gaming system that is all about the fun, all about the experience.

For example, the game's impulse system keeps both players actively involved in every minute of play. A squad based system; the units represent US Army, US Marines, Viet Cong, NVA regulars, and ARVN squads, half-squads, 12.7mm machinegun teams, M60s, RPGs, M-48 tanks, and much more. The single man counters include leaders, medics, heroes, advisers, chaplains, and snipers. Each significantly affects play.

Skill cards add unique attributes to heroes and leaders alike. These cards bestow benefits such as stealth bonuses, ambush experts, and many others.

Additionally, the game's random events add a twist to each scenario. Your objective maybe to capture the town, but suddenly a Huey goes into the brush 500 feet downstream. You know that you have to rescue that pilot, but so do the Viet Cong! Playing Lock 'n Load often feels like reading a good military adventure. Desperate assaults, unexpected ambushes, and stand up firefights are all part of the fun.

    Each game includes:
    • Five, lushly drawn maps depicting the Vietnamese country side.
    • 340 beautiful counters
    • 16 Skill Cards for enhancing the capabilities of leaders and heroes.
    • The latest Lock 'n Load system rules.
    • A player aid card and dice.
