An ancient threat rears its head once more...

Deep in the bowels of the world, there lies a chasm that was sealed over a millennium ago. Within it lies a force of evil so great that, were it to be unleashed, it would plunge the world into a thousand years of darkness.

Before you can face that challenge, however, you'll battle your way through dank tunnels, trapped temples, and even volcanoes to prove your worth. You'll face a host of new tricks, traps, and other lethal obstabcles over the course of your quest, including scything blades, rolling boulders, and boiling hot lava.

Descent: The Well of Darkness includes more than 30 new plastic miniatures, featuring six new heroes, tricky kobolds, bloodsucking ferrox, and unstoppable golems. Heroes will find more skills and treasures at their disposal, including six new relics and a new type of potion. The Overlord, on the other hand, gains the ability to customize his deck before every game, putting in devastating new trap, event, and spawn cards.

If you liked the original Descent then you will almost certainly like more of the same, this expansion adds more creatures, traps and goodies to the base game and adds a number of new quests to those from the original game. Like most Fantasy Flight games what`s here is good quality, there are some very nice monsters, although the poses seem a bit static in my opinion, but at least they should fit the tiles a bit better than some of the original creatures. The Golem is a nice heavy weight corridor blocking creature, resiliant, Ferrox make characters lose health over subsequent rounds with their bleed ability, kobolds gang up on the heroes and make traps cost less to play. The cards and extra tiles etc are nice thick cardstock like the original game, hardly surprising but good to see. There are some new heroes which seem a good fit with those of the original game. The Overlord player can now customise his threat deck with new traps and creatures using the new Treachery rules. There is some new equipment for the heroes which makes the overall weapons and armour balance in the game better. The rulebook includes updates and clarifications to the rules of the original game which is nice, and there are new monster cards which make some of the base games creatures a little more useful. If I was being negative, well, there is one adventure I can see in the book that could be impossible to complete for the heroes if the overlord plays to the letter of the rules. I think with all the new toys for the overlord, he is going to have to try and show a little restraint or the heroes might not be able to achieve much in games, but I would guess most Overlords who have played the original set of adventures have a good idea of how to make the game interesting rather than simply lethal. Descent is very much a hobby game, so any extras are a good investment and add to the experience and this is a great expansion for the base game, and probably the one I would recommend as your first expansion to the game.
