  Description

World War II was the greatest struggle of nations that our world had ever seen. Like tides of iron, fighting men and their machines swept across continents, their fates defining a generation and the course of history.

June 6th, 1944, D-day. The massive allied military landing in Normandy was heralded as "the longest day" of the war. Yet, it was but the opening salvo for the Allied offensive into western Europe. During the year that followed, American forces and their British allies encountered strong German resistance, enduring setbacks in Holland and barely containuing the last German offensive in the Ardennes forest.

Although bludgeoned by defeats in Russian and Africa, and systematically weakened by Allied bombing of its supply and production infrastructure, the German army remained a formidable foe. The soldiers and officers of Germany's "Wehrmacht" were well trained, battle hardened, and in possession of some of the finest and most lethal equipment of the war.

TIDE OF IRON is a board game of tactical World War II combat. This epic game grants 2-4 players control of either the American or German military forces, pitting squads of fighting men and vehicles against each other in one of the many enclosed scenarios.

An innovative game system allows players to customize their squad compositions, to make both tactical and strategic decisions with the unique "command" system, and to engage the enemy through the planning and exectuion of WWII battlefield tactics.

TIDE OF IRON provides players with a vast array of high quality modular game boards, terrain overlay pieces, various battlefield fortifications, operations and strategy cards, as well as 17 unique unit types.

A big box attempt by Fantasy flight games to bridge the gap between full fledged wargame and boardgame. As usual the quality of all the bits is amazing, plastic tanks and infantry and really heavy duty hardboard modular terrain hex maps. The infantry slot into bases with little pegs, this allows you customise the bases with different troop mixes and you can further customise the bases by adding speciality tokens to the back of the base. However the pegs are a little stiff to start with are difficult to put in and take out which makes this aspect a bit fiddly, apparently they do wear to a better fit as time goes on. Combat in the game involves rolling lots of dice. There are a variety of units to play with including infantry, mortars, heavy machine guns, tanks and trucks. There is a degree of luck in the combat, but I dont think it outweighs the need for good tactical awareness. One things I did like is the event and supply cards, these are paid for by command pts which are gained by controlling areas of the battlefield. You can choose to buy event cards with these pts or use them to gain the initiative on the battlefield. You have an agonising choice between bolstering your forces or getting first turn. Scenarios are varied and interesting but are quite unbalanced so are really to play for interst rather than competition, although an unbalanced scenario can be useful when and expert plays a novice. The scenarios are not really based on a faithful depiction of particular battles, but rather try for a flavour of world war II. This is a really nice game, that is a nice introduction to wargames thats I think anyone interested in this area of gaming would enjoy. The Fantasy Flight website also publishes extra scenarios to supplement those in the included scenario book.
