  Description

Tinner's Trail is set in 19th century Cornwall and focuses on the copper and tin mining that flourished then.

You take on the role of a mining venturer, attempting to build mines in the richest areas. Your biggest problem is the water that must be pumped out of the mines. The deeper you go the more water that needs to be removed. Fortunately steam pumps were being developed at this time, along with ships and trains to bring in the coal needed to feed them. You can also build underground drainage tunnels, known as adits, to drain the water and find new lodes of ore.

The price of tine and copper will rise and fall dramatically and you must be careful to sell when the prices are high. With your profits you can invest in other industries around the country, while being prudent to keep enough capital back to build new mines.

Tinner's Trail is for three to four players and should take around sixty to ninety minutes to play. While being simpler than many other Warfrog games it is still complex enough to challenge the seasoned gamer.

This box should contain a colour mounted map, over 280 wooden playing pieces, three special dice, and a set of English rules. Plastic bags have also been provided to keep your pieces in.

This is a really nice game themed on Tin & Copper mining in cornwall. Players take various actions on their turn and these actions cost a certain amount of time points which is marked using a players piece on a grid. As various actions are taken players pieces move across the board which helps determine play order. The pieces are very nice as is the board which is a very nice map of the area. I liked playing this game and would most certainly play it again if given the chance. There is a lot to think about in this game which helps to make it interesting. You have auctions, Prospecting, taking pieces to aid you in your mining, mining itself where the costs to extract the ore is based on the amount of water in your mine.

All in all this is a good game

Yet another great Martin Wallace game. I have played this more than anything else since buying this at UK Games Expo. It has a number of innovative game mechanics that sustain your interest and make for an enjoyable and challenging experience. It is a very competitive and interactive game so you need to keep your wits about you to ensure that you acrue enough victory points. Tin and copper mining during nineteenth centruy Cornwall is the theme; the 'Tinners' Trail' being the long walk miners made between the mines and their homes. During each game turn you spend 'time' (and in some cases money too) to carry out actions. Actions include auctioning and purchasing mines; draining water from mines using 'adits' or ditches, or pumps; transporting copper or tin ore by ship or train; mining ore; and deploying miners to your mines to increase the rate of extraction of ore. You can even spend one time point to 'sell pasties' (cost one time point but generates £1). Each time point spent is represented by one of your coloured markers on the time track; this being one of the many innovative designs which determine turn order, an important, if not, essential strategy you'll need to adopt if you intend to compete or even win games. Exctracting or mining ore is another clever procedure, as the cost of ore varies for each of the four game turns. The first and second players in turn order at the end of each turn also get to prospect undiscovered regions of Cornwall. Each area generates (randomly at the start of the game and then during each propsecting phase) tin, copper and water. The cost to mine each area is affected by the amount of water in each mine, so too much water is not good as this makes the mine more expensive to extract ore from. Players need to continually balance the cost of mining ore and the benefits at the end of each turn when selling copper or tin (depending on the price for that turn). At the end of each turn, in turn order (very important!) players spend their hard earned cash to buy victory points. This is represented by a grid that is beautifully presented on a very busy game board - I personally like busy looking games - and is set out as four rows representing each of the four game turns and a number of coloumns representing the cost of victory points. Needless to say the first player to buy VPs gets an advantage. There is lot more to the game and it is easy to learn how to play. The substance of this game is in the strategy and the quality of game play. Superb game! Well done again Martin!
