Phil sold me this game just after xmas and its cool. Great quality components and a hand carry sack allows for easy 'on the go' play. Basically use you tiles to surround your opponents queen, but different tiles with different insects move round each other in different ways (hopping, flying, skipping round edge, clambering over top etc) which allows fo a great degree of skill and planning. The games take about 30-45mins so low boredom level. Its cheap and for the quality its a bargain.

A quick, fun abstract game with a well matched theme. If you like abstracts, you may well like this. Some of its strengths are its portability (you could take this to the pub or play on a train), its value for money, it's speed (each game is often less than 5 mins), it's ease to learn, its viability as a game you can play with kids, its attractiveness. It has about the right amount of depth for a game of its type.

Surround your opponents queen bee before they do the same to yours. A very easy to understand concept. A slightly more difficult to execute result. I find this game very addictive, and despite playing it quite a bit, still manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on a regular basis. Each insect has their own unique way of moving and the only rule is that the hive can never be split.

A wonderful simple-to-learn, hard-to-master game. Buy it.

And I can confirm the below reviewers comments regarding the colours. The second edition is far easier to seperate which piece belongs to which player.

Every where you look Hive is being praised and this review is going to be no diffrent.

I love playing this game it is portable, can be played almost anywhere that has a flat surface, easy to learn yet has enough depth to keep even the most harded game player interested.

The only complaint that I have is that I have a first edition copy that has a little problem with the colours under certain lighting. I have been told that this second edition solves that problem.

If you love games of stratergy and do not mind that fact that it is abstract you will love this game (I also know someone that does not like abstract games that loves this game)
