History: After six months of frustration in front of Vicksburg, Grant has hit upon success: Slip south of the Rebel fortress to cross the Mississippi downstream and operate in the rear of Pemberton's Confederate defenders.

Unable to ignore that threat, the Rebels march out to fight. The result is the collision at Champion Hill. In one day's confused fighting amidst thick woods, steep hills and deep ravines, Grant's aggressively led Army of the Tennessee soundly defeats the Confederates.

While weeks of siegework still lie ahead, the fate of Vicksburg has been sealed...

The Game: Champion Hill recreates the critical action of 17 May 1863, between Pemberton and Grant.

Alternative scenarios explore earlier start times for the battle, additional strength to Pemberton's army (he split his forces badly before the battle) and the arrival of Johnston's Confederate Army of relief in time to join the fighting.

Grant, too has more men to summon to the field. Finally, additional scenarios fully explore both the set-piece and meeting-engagement possibilities inherent in the situation.
