On 7 December 1941, the US naval base at Pearl harbour, Hawaii, was attacked by Japanese aircaft. For the next four years, Allied task forces engaged the Imperial Japanese fleet across much of the Pacific Ocean. Marine and Army units waged a war of island-hopping, wresting from the Japanese the empire they had attempted to expand in every direction.

War in the Pacific is an omni-level simulation of World War II's Pacific Theater of Operations. It enables players to recreate the entirety of that immense war, from the opening Japanese attack to the climactic Allied assaults. Showing about 30 percent of the entire globe, the seven full-size strategic maps (nearly 42 square feet) let players move and engage in combat in the air, on the ground and across and even under water.

New in this update are tactical maps of over 300 islands originally fought over plus many more than might have been contested. These tactical maps are at scales of 0.5 to 10 miles per hex. They provide for more realism as forces maneuver to assault or defend important bases, airfields, and other installations.

There are also 32 die-cut counter-sheets, totalling nearly 9,000 counters. There are nearly 2,000 counters just for ships alone. Every major warship is individually depicted with its name, pennant number and silhouette, and is rated for surface combat, anti-air defence and aircraft capabilities for carriers. Thousands of aircraft groups and wings are represented by highly-detailed line drawings of the aircraft in period paintings. A greatly expanded land unit order of battle down to the brigade and regimental level (including many battalions and even a few companies) is included with historical designations on all units (except break-down units). Dozens of generals, admirals, captains and aces that led their forces to victory or defeat are individually rated for their abilities to enhance search, combat, movement, and other vital functions. Assignment of the right task force commander to the right force at the right time will often spell the difference between victory and defeat.

There are six rules and chart books covering over 400 pages with incredible detail about every aspect of operations. Also included are over two dozen assorted displays and player aids to facilitate play.

This is a revamped version of the original War in the Pacific game released by SPI decades ago. The update has made this new War in the Pacific into an even more impressive 'monster' game, truly the 'tsunami' of all wargames. Emphasis is now balanced between the supply/logistical and command/operational sides of the war. Supply management and operational planning, now headquarters-based, remain important and challenging tasks.

Operational aspects are accurately modelled from the historic standpoint, as is the order of battle. The ground combat rules have also been revised to include a step-loss system. Pitched battles on islands and atolls are now resolved, including maneuver, on expanded tactical maps, rather than simply being abstractly visualized as taking place within single hexagons on the strategic maps. War in the Pacific's original air and naval systems have been retained, but with modifications. Most importantly, extensive play testing has been an integral part of this game's development.

Several famous battles and campaigns are presented as scenarios, and, of course, there is the grand scenario covering the entire war including strategic aspects such as bombing, submarine warfare, resources and production. Players can easily create endless historical and what-if situations to examine alternate operations and strategies and test their skills and ideas. War in the Pacific is ideal for team play.

Presented on an even more massive scale than the original, War in the Pacific isn't for the faint of heart. Playing the smaller scenarios will enable players to become familiar with the mechanics of the larger game and prepare to play campaigns and even the entire war. Both the devotees of the original game, as well as those who have a desire to explore the Pacific war on a scale they could never before have attempted will find their money and time are well spent here.
