Ancient battles were fought in organised formations. The leaders of both sides directed their forces along the battle line to gain tactical advantage in order to overwhelm their opponent in the centre, breakthrough one of his flanks, or hold their position until the time came for a decisive move. How will you muster your battle line! Your objective is to create powerful formations on your side of the nine Flags, in order to beat the formations on your opponent's side of the respective Flags. The first player to win three adjacent Flags (a Breakthrough) or any five Flags (an Envelopment) achieves victory. Battle Line is based on Reiner Knizia's original design published in Germany as Shotten-Totten, Battle Line enhances and expands the game system to give players more tactical options.

Smashing Game, based on Schotten-Totten, but having extra battle cards that can change the play on any of the flags. Basically, it's somewhat like Poker in that if you get three cards that are in the same suit and are consecutive then that's the highest hand you can play on a flag. Three of a kind comes next, etc. Unlike Poker, there are 6 colours of cards and you continually get chances to upadte your hand. When you get a good card, it's hard to know where to best play it as there are usually several options. You win if you capture 5 of the 9 flags or score a breakthrough by capturing 3 in a row. The extra battle cards enable you to do things such as steal cards off of your opponent, swap around cards already played and play "jokers." It's a great two player game and can be quite addictive.
