Simple resource managment with a random element.

Over the last few years it seems that a lot of resource management games have tried to remove the random element from the game. I am glad to find one that has bucked the trend in a quick and simple game. I am sure with players that know what they where doing you could play this game in 30 minutes.

Having played this game a few times now I find it a lot fun and very quick to play.

We have played this 4 or 5 times now and have enjoyed each game enormously, even if we did initially play it wrong! As the other review says, money is generally hard to come by in this game, the main source of the money comes from the worker cards, so I like to buy these as often as I can to bring in the revenue. However, this gets quickly spent on the buildings, which earn the VPs, not to mention the aristcrats who can earn money and VPs. In this game, you try and get sets of the workers, but get as many different aristocrats as you can, which boosts your VPs at the game end. The fourth pack of cards are used to improve the other cards. All in all, a well thought out card game with some good strategic playing elements and one that can be reccommended unreservedly.

Saint Petersburg is, in it's simplest form, a resource management game. The resource in question is cold, hard cash. There's not very much of it around during this game, particularly in the early stages, which makes this game a little more challenging than it first appears.

Essentially there are four different types of cards to be collected by the players during the game: Traders make you the money, Buildings earn you victory points and aristocrats get you both. All these card types cost varying amounts of that cold, hard commodity I mentioned earlier. The fourth type of cards to be found are upgrades which, as the name suggests, upgrade your existing cards. All three different types of cards assist the players in various ways either earning them cash to 'buy' better cards, or victory points. The player who collects the most victory points wins the game - something I found to my cost when I first played this one, as after struggling for cash all game I contented myself in my new found wealth at game end - only to realise too late I hadn't got myself the victory points needed to trouble the scorers. I guess the old saying You can't take it with you is pretty apt for this game.

All in all a thouroughly enjoyable game that is well worth adding to your collections.
