The Southern French city of Carcassonne was founded on an important trade route between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Because of its strategic location, the city was often conquered and has known many rulers. As a result of this varied history, the city is famous for its unique mixture of Roman and Medieval fortifications.

The players develop the area around Carcassonne by placing land tiles. Each turn the area becomes larger as the players expand and add roads, fields, cities and cloisters. The players may also deploy their followers as thieves, farmers, knights, and monks to control and score points for the roads, farms, cities, and cloisters. As the players have only a few followers, the wise player will plan his moves carefully and deploy followers when and where he can earn the most points.

Contents:
* 72 land tiles
* 1 scoring track
* 40 followers in 5 colours
* 1 rule booklet

For 2-5 players, especially good for two players, expandable to 6.

This, I believe, is the game that started it all – my conversion to part-time game geek. When hubby brought this one home he was still in his experimental period wanting more to life than cluedo, scrabble and monopoly but not quite sure where to turn. He turned here and I have to admit it was a great place to start. I won’t bore you with the details as the other reviews have covered those but I will however highly recommend this game to anyone looking for an alternative to the commercial rubbish that is out in the shops nowadays. It’s a game that’s easy to pick up, different every time you play and if you should find yourself getting a little bored of it, there is a variety of expansions to the existing game and even variants of the original game that pretty much ensure that this one remains your games cupboard staple for years to come.

The historical importance of this to gaming is not to be sniffed at and I will normally be up for a game of it, since it's a lot of fun (esp if you play with everyone always having a tile in hand to speed it up). Hunters and Gatherers is, for me, a better game because the forests are less fiddly than the cities, the rivers allow for better scoring than the roads, and (most importantly), the meadows are not likely to be as sprawling as the farms.

But, let's be clear here - this is the first of a series of superb gateway games. I'd rank the best of the Carcassonne series right up there with Ticket to Ride - and much better than Settlers (but then again, I don't like Settlers at all, so I'm biased there). Art is good and to play it at its best you need to throw in at least a couple of expansions - esp with 4/5 players. TBH though, this is better with 2-4 players.

A classic. Carcassonne got me into boardgames, every home should have it. Simple enough to teach your cat (almost) it has been played and played since i bought it. Tile laying perfection.

This is one of the all time classics, a cracking game that is easy to learn fun to play but hard to master.

The idea is that you lay tiles, then put men on the tiles which score in various ways when either the game, or the section they are on, is complete.

This game has several expansions and each seems to add a new twist to the game.

One of the best tile laying games out there. Each expansion has added more to the game, with each addition adding more to the play of the game without making the game become unwieldy, as can happen sometimes when a game spawns expansions. yet, at the same time, if you can only get hold of the original game, or only one or two of the expansions you will not be missing any vital elements and can still enjoy the game to the full.

This one the games we play most often. The rules are simple and the strategies are numerous. Simple rules makes it easy to explain to usually "non-playing" people and very quick to understand. As you draw the tiles, chance has a part to play in the game which makes it either a good game (for non "strategical" players) or a bad one for the ones who like to control everything. Playing at two players obviously helps to build strategies (you draw more tiles) than playing with 4 players or more. The different extensions create a richer game : - the 1st one add some more tiles with additional effects (for instance lakes which double the number of points for the routes) - the 2nd one (Handler und Baumeister) is really good : you can earn different merchandises (wine, wheat, ...) according to the town you close. This creates other strategies to this already good game. A very good game to initiate people to boardgames !!!

This is a simple game concept, just lay tiles and score points. The skill comes from trying to master the different strategies for winning the game, do you commit to farmers, build cities or try for monastery power. The game is very simple for children to play, and the simple rules allow all ages to play without hinderance. As usual the game is well designed and the peices are of an excellent quality. The game is further enhanced by the expansions.
