Through the Ages is an exciting game of strategy and resouce management. Players guide their civilizations up from Antiquity, through the Middle Ages, and into Modern Times.

What will your civilization be like? Will it be warlike? Technologically advanced? Religilous? Artistic? Choose from Leaders such as Hammurabi, Napoleon, and Ghandi. Build the Pyramids, the Great Wall, or the Eiffel Tower. Your Civilization's culture is yours to shape - and you can do it differently every time you play the game.

Through the Ages can be played on three levels. Play the short Tutorial Game to learn the game mechanics. Play the Advanced Game when you are ready to face the consequences of politics and corruption. And when you want an even greater challenge, play the Full Version of Through the Ages and take your civilization from spear-throwing to space flight.

Review

This is a card driven civilization building game and works very well, considering the scope of the game. The game is played over 3 eras, is a lot of fun as you build up your empire, managing your resources to support your growing empire.

The rulebook has three rule versions, simple play to get you into how the game mechanisms work, advanced play which introduces a few extra rules and the full game which builds on what you have now learnt about the game, but isn't actually any more complex than the advanced game.

Each player has a resource board which represents Population, minerals, food, and happiness. All needing attention to make your empire grow.
The decks of cards represent the various parts of your empire such as farming, temples, soldiers, leaders, mines, etc. These are improved as your empire improves.

Here is a brief overview of a game turn:
Poltical action - This is the phase where Events and Wars are conducted.
Civilization Action - The number of actions you have depends on the government you own. You use these actions to draw from the card row, build buildings or units, develop technologies and increase population.
Production action - This phase is where you produce food and raw materials from the mines and farms. This is used to develop your nation in later turns. Science advances are gained from the labs and libraries, and the civilisation as a whole will develop its culture.

There are various ways to victory and this is part of the games appeal. The game is for up to 4 players, but the sweetspot is probably with 2 or 3 players.
