Perhaps, for some, this might just be another Columbia block game: wooden blocks, unseen units, step reduction with steps determining the number of dice rolled in combat, units rated A-D affecting the order in which you fire, a hand of cards to determine the number of actions each phase of the turn...etc. Certainly, I've read a fair number of criticisms of Columbia games along those lines. For me, though, I find the system a well-oiled machine that works, allowing me to absorb quickly the small differences which make each game unique. As a result I can rapidly be focusing on the situation and the strategy. Being a Lancastrian by birth, the Wars of The Roses and Richard III cannot fail to grab my attention. Combine with that a glorious and richly coloured map, simple but vivid blocks with all the pageantry of heraldic shields to identify them, rules for treachery, each side possessing a line of royal heirs and you've got a winning product. Three short campaigning seasons constitute the three turns and a playing time of approximately 2 hrs Don't expect to learn a lot of history from playing the game, but revel in the feel of armies manoeuvring across England and Wales, being driven into exile, regaining a foothold in the country or desperately clinging on to the areas you hold.
