By 1938, the Second Sino-Japanese war was not going well for the Chinese. The Japanese had conquered huge swathes of Northern and Eastern China and were steadily pushing deeper. With the Japanese conquest of Shanghai, Beijing, and Nanjing, Nationalist leader Chang Kai Shek moved his headquarters to Wu Han.The Japanese saw an opportunity to capture the rail junction of Xuzhou and thereby endanger Wu Han, which could force a Chinese capitulation. The Nationalist Chinese generals, however, also saw the Japanese move as an opportunity to lure their enemy's forces into a cul-de-sac where they could be encircled by the numerically-superior Chinese forces. The town of Taierzhuang was chosen as the site for this trap. Storm Over Taierzhuang is easy to learn, re-playable and interactive. Tactical chits represent various battlefield advantages and random events give variety to both sides' play.

|The most difficult part of the game is pronouncing its name! Not surprisingly this is an unknown [unless you have come across this game] battle taken from the Sino-Japanese war of 1937-45. The Storm Over...series began with Stalingrad and the system adapts the mechanics begun way back with Avalon Hill's Storm Over Arnhem into a slim-line version. This is a straight boardwargame involving rea movement and card board counters for units with each side taking it in turn to activate some or all of the units in one of those areas. These are fairly fast playing with two hours being a typical length. The main introduction, not seen in the original AH games, is a deck of cards that introduce one off actions like air strikes or artillery bombardment. These are essentially chrome, but add nice touches and variety to each game. Here one side is predominantly on the defensive, but the victory conditions in fact make it extremely difficult for the Japanese, who have overwhelming forces on their side, to win.|
