    Review

As the owner of a considerable amount of Memoir 44 material, the first two C&C Ancients, C&C Napoleonics and Samurai Battles, the question of whether to add Battles of Westeros was a moot point. Was it really the next step that I needed? This was especially problematic, as BattleLore had not appealed.

My interest in George R Martin’s books and a love of the boardgame, A Game of Thrones, was undoubtedly a strong factor in my decision to take the plunge.

Physically, the game surpasses all those mentioned in my introduction, except for Samurai Battles’ figures. However, the irritation expressed by some folks at having to glue BOW figures into their bases pales into insignificance against the delicate, frustrating and consistently difficult task of assembling the samurai figures.

In this core game of BOW alone, there is a good range of variety in types of units, and all are well crafted and detailed. With the expansions, that range is vastly extended.

What takes BOW way beyond previous games of the C&C type is the quality of the artwork both in board, terrain tiles, cards rule book and scenario book. There is a detail and richness to the hues that positively reeks of the game’s mediaeval/fantasy background and the terrain tiles have a weighty heft to them. Besides, the mapboard has been significantly increased in size with an extra 2 hexes in depth and width.

Perhaps, even more significant is that the board is no longer divided into the familiar three sections: left flank, centre, right flank.

This adds much greater flexibility to your actions, as much of your game play will focus on your leaders and their ability to activate units within their command range. Both your leaders and your units can vary in specific abilities and every unit can be at three levels of ability. If this sounds like a complicated game, it's not. All is handled very smoothly and easily, mainly because scenarios rarely having more than about 12 units per side and three or four types of units involved.

A final plus is that the scenarios are of vastly different types, despite victory points mainly being gained by eliminating enemy units and holding objective hexes.

This really is one you should have in your collection.
