Flintlock is a company-level game covering tactical warfare in the 18th century. It focuses on the effects of formations, the era's use of linear warfare, how units fight, and commanding small forces in an era when close combat was the norm. Modeled at a scale rarely seen for this era, Flintlock allows players to fight these small battles as they occurred historically.

Volume 1, Carolina Rebels, covers four of the battles - Camden, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, and Hobkirk's Hill - that took place in North and South Carolina during the Birtish Southern Campaign: General Cornwallis' effort to strike at the colonies through their underbelly, and General Nathanael Greene's attempts to thwart that effort.

The map scale is 40-50 yards per hex, each combat unit/counter equals about 50 men, and artillery counters represent one gun. There is no time scale, as there are no turns. To determine initiative (or which player can activate his units), the players use a continuity mechanic based on the Initiative Rating of each army's Leader; and play goes on until someone wins.

Flintlock's most unique aspect is its combat systems. During Fire Attacks, individual units fire at individual enemy units in an effort to reduce their effectiveness so that they will either break without having to resort to a Shock Attack (hand-to-hand combat) or be so weak that they disintegrate upon the threat of one. Unlike Fire Attacks, individual units do not conduct Shock Attacks; all the units in one line undertake a single Shock Attack. To that effect, the units of a regiment are rated by Battle Cohesion and Shock Status, their ability to withstand the rigors of such combat. Counterattack, Stand and Defend, Fall Back, or Collapse. If a Shock Attack does take place, units do not suffer casualties in the sense that the counters are flipped, etc. What happens is a loss in Shock Status, making units less able to defend (or attack) in Shock.

Even with its remarkable detail and unique combat systems, Flintlock: Volume 1: Carolina Rebels is a game of moderate complexity. The battles, with the exception of Guilford Courthouse, are all playable in a couple of hours. The game is also suited for solitaire play.
