Twice, Japan's poker-playing Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto gambled his country's future in the waters off Hawaii. The attack on Pearl Harour stunned the U.S. Pacific fleet, but sparked furious anger among the Americans. Seven months later, the Japanese tried to lure the Americans into a pitched battle at Midway. American fliers sank four Japanese carriers and broke the Combined Fleet's power. In one afternoon, the war turned against Japan.
