300AD: The Polynesians embark on daring sailing trips and explore thousands of Pacific islands. Driven by overpopulation and a desire for adventure, they set forth into the unknown on simple catamarans called Tongiakis. Without any help from naviational instruments, they charted their course with the help of the sun, stars, wind and water temperature. Birds, reefs, cloud formations, fishes and distinctive waves were the signals telling them that land lay nearby. Each trip became a life-threatening journey, as landfall was often impossible to achieve or the way home became cut off by strong currents. Suspense was their constant companion. Will the next hour, the next day bring them to their goal... or will the ocean's curents force them to drift endlessly at sea?

Review

This game is about island hopping and trying to secure the most points from those islands. The game begins on just one island tile, Tonga. As players add more boats, the beaches will fill up and when a beach is full of boats, all the boats set sail en masse in search of another island. The sea tiles have routes on them and each route has a number. A journey across the sea tile is safely made if the number of different coloured boats equals or eceeds the number on the route, otherwise all boats are lost and returned to their owners. If successful, then another tile is turned, if its sea the journey continues, hopefully, or if its land, then landfall is made and the boats are spread around the new islands beaches.

What can sometimes happen is that the new arrivals fill up the island beaches if they are already occupied and the boats on the next full beach have to set sail, resulting in something of a cascade affect until you end up with no full beaches.

An interesting good fun game that's playable in about an hour.
