The 'romantic' notion of piracy presented by films and popular fiction has long established an image of these ship-borne desperadoes in peoples imagination. Ironically, true historical sources often produce an even more interesting (if brutal) picture of the way 9in which these outlaws operated. The game system presented within these covers relies heavily on historical material relating to the 16th, 17th and mid-18th centuries, but also allows the flexibility for players who wish to include actions and events which incorporate a degree of 'Hollywood' style. The basic game presents a straight forward skirmish system which allows for many of the activities specific to pirate style actions to be incorporated (such as grappling opposing vessels, scaling ropes during boarding and the initial shock effect of a pirate assault). The 'Advanced' section provides the fundamental framework to allow players to bring in factors such as temperament, abilities and task difficulty into their scenarios to whatever degree is required. The final section of the text includes a ready to play scenario, along with suggestions as to how this might be further developed. Ideas for alternative4 scenarios are also presented. Play is enhanced by the provision of two rapid reference sheets which summarise the basic system. Because they are printed on facing pages, and the polycomb binding enables the book to be laid flat, all of the vital information can be obtained without the need to constantly refer back to the main text, consequently speeding up games. Whether dealing with a group of buccaneers operating in rowing boats from an atoll, or q 'fully fledged' pirate ship with cannon, swivel guns and a well armed and experienced crew, the enclosed system enables the player to recreate actions from the 'Golden Age' of piracy.
