The second half of the 19th century produced many of the most famous battles in American history, from the major engagements of the Civil War through to events such as the battle of the Little Big Horn. Despite this, much of America's history during this period was also shaped by comparatively minor skirmish actions. Some Confederate cavalry units who mounted guerilla raids against Union interests continued their activities as outlaws after the war, giving rise to 'outfits' such as the James/Younger gang who instigated the infamous Northfield, Minnesota raid. Small groups of Texas Rangers were almost constantly in action against Mexican bandits, Indian raiding parties and outlaw bands throughout the period and, Little Big Horn aside, Regular Army units fought countless skirmish actions against renegade Native American war parties. Add to this widespread cattle rustling, range wars and feuds and the player is almost spoilt for choice when it comes to the variety of scenarios which capture the flavour of the period.

Between these covers lies a game system which enables the above events to be recreated using scale model combatant. The flow of play is enhanced by the inclusion of two ready reference sheets printed on facing pages, and the comb binding enables the book to be laid flat during play to avoid the need to constantly refer back to find the required information.

Wild Frontiers also includes an introductory scenario at the end of the text in order to introduce players to the game system.
