Following the Battle fo Chancellorsville and the death of Jackson in May 1863, Lee undertook a reorganisation of the Army of Northern Virginia. From the two corps that had been avaialble when Jackson was alive he formed three new corps commanded by Longstreet, Ewell and Hill. Each corps consisted of three divisions, two of four brigades each and one of five brigades. Each division contained a battalion of artillery and to each corps was attached an additional two battalions of guns as a corps reserve. The cavalry too was reorganised. He then gathered together all of the cavalry in Virginia, drawing in the forces from western and southwestern Virginia, and organised a single corps, under Stuart, with its own battalion of horse artillery.
