XIA is a 3-5 player, sandbox-style, competitive space adventure. Each player starts as a lowly (but hopeful!) captain of a small starship.

Players fly their ships about the system completing a variety of missions, exploring new sectors, and battling other ships. Captains vie with each other for Titles, riches, and, most importantly, Fame.

Epic space-themed 4X game. A beautiful game with lots of thematic flavour and back story, and plenty of freedom in the game so that you can play how you want and no two games will feel the same. A true sandbox game where you can explore, trade, pick-up and deliver, complete missions, engage in combat and piracy and all are good strategies to amass Fame Points by which you win the game! Firstly, the game is higher cost, but the production values are off the scale - metal coins (credits with a unique and thematic sci-fi design), lots of pre-painted miniatures, good quality cards, acrylic cubes and thick tiles, an impressive game that looks great on the table. The most satisfying aspect of the game play is having the freedom to use your ship for whatever purpose you like, it feels a lot like the sci-fi series Firefly in this regard. As you explore the drift system and uncover new tiles and locations, you will gain Fame Points by completing missions, trading, engaging in combat, exploring the the system, and upgrading your ship. This game is a lot of fun and each session will tell a story, unfortunately mine usually involves getting stranded by not managing my resources wisely, and then getting blown apart by a player who needed to destroy a ship in order to complete a mission card and get Fame Points! The game is not punishing though. The game comes with 3x Non Playable Characters that add depth and flavour to the game; The Enforcer - who chases anyone with a bounty on their head; The Merchant - who follows a trade route amassing more and more wealth in their cargo hold; The Scoundrel - who follows the nearest innocent player and looks to rob them of their cargo! These NPC ships round out the gameplay and give players more to think about as they decide what they want out of the game. As the tiles are revealed and placed through exploration, more locations are uncovered, trade routes are established, portals are opened and dangerous asteroid belts/debris fields are noted. I really like the way movement in this game is not straightforward and players will have to negotiate all these hazards and pick their way through the drift system. My only criticism is the game perhaps plays too long at easily over three hours if you're playing to the full quota of Fame Points, however you don't have to play to 20 Fame Points, and in any case this is more of an 'event game' similar to Twilight Imperium where you would set a day aside in order to enjoy it fully. Also there is a LOT of dice rolling in the game unsurprisingly so there is a lot of luck involved, but again this feels in keeping with the unpredictability of the environment and the hazards of operating in the drift system, and in any case house rules can mitigate this issue, for example I know people who roll two dice for movement and pick the better value, as rolling one's continually can really suck! Overall this is an awesome game, and well worth the higher retail price and I'm excited about receiving the upcoming expansion which adds a ton of great content to the game, including solo rules, more sector tiles, ships, events, mechanics and an additional resource in the game to name just a few, so bear in mind that if you buy the base game it is being well supported by the publisher and there is additional game content being produced.
