Rock of the Marne is the 12th game in the award winning Standard Combat Series. It covers the final German attack in July 1918 and the Allied counteroffensive that ended the Second Battle of the Marne and sealed Germany's fate in the Great War.
The Germans thought they could pinch the Allied salient and produce a breakout across the Marne toward Paris. They did produce their bridgehead but were shocked to discover the bitter resolve of the Allies and the power of an attack from an unforeseen direction three days later. That attack came from an army they had dismissed earlier: Black Jack Pershing's American.
The Germans would never again resume the offensive in World War One.
In Rock of the Marne, players run the German offensive or the Allied counteroffensive and determine the end of World War I. Both sides are at the breaking point. One will prevail. Will it be yours?
Each turn is a half or full day and each hex is 1.25 miles. Units range from regiment to division while Machine Gun and Tank units are smaller. Air units consist of 50 planes each.
Here, players have the opportunity to see the two solutions to the WW1 tactical dilemma head to head: the Germans with their Stormtrooper infantry tactics and the Allies with their technical answer - the tank.
Designed by John Best, designer of the game on the beginning of the German offensive in 1918 (Operation Michael), Mr. Best designed Rock of the Marne to be both a fast playing and enjoyable game that provides the players with additional insight into this key campaign.
