The War for the Union is a strategic level simulation on the American Civil War. The Civil War comes alive on your gaming table in this compete treatment of one of the most important events in history. This long awaited second edition puts all the armed forces of the time at your disposal, along with the generas who led them - good or not so good. Play out the American Civil War on your game table and see if you can save the Union, or change history.

This new edition of the game has larger counters and two 22 x 34 maps. Southeast Texas, including Houston and Galveston, has been added to the map, as well as an extra row of hexes on rhe north edge. There are now sea zones to simplify sea movement.

There are Militia, Volunteer, Veteran, and Union Regular infantry and cavalry strength points. The leaders have a Command Rating, a Battle Rating, and a Movement Factor which also influences forced marches. There are seagoing and riverine naval units. Also included are batteries, forts, and entrenchments. Many of these counters have been updated and some new counters have been added.

Combat uses an attrition CRT with light, Medium, and Heavy losses along with retreats. Troop units can also incur Fatigue during combat. Higher quality troops amd better leaders are very helpful in combat. An Army counter is important in many ways including being able to use the troops and leaders more efficiently in combat. Naval combat has three levels of damage and batteries can be reduced or suppressed.

The game has two short introductory scenarios and two 7 turn scenarios. All four of these are played in just one Theatre. There are three one year scenarios that use the entire map. And then there is the 1861-18665 Campaign Game. Besides the 1865 Victory Conditions, either player can win by achieving the Sudden Death Victory Conditions at the end of 1862, 1863, or 1864. The important Presidential Election occurs at the beginning of the November 1864 turn.
