Reviews Review Game

My review of this game is perhaps going to be a lonely opinion but nevertheless I can only report the experiences of my group... I bought this off the back of some very favourable reviews, and from watching the Rahdo playthrough. I had previously played Pandemic and found it a little thin on theme and a bit too abstracted and 'puzzly'. I personally enjoyed my few plays of this but the game fell flat a little in my group, possibly for the same reasons Pandemic had not gone down well. The desert tiles being constantly moved after every turn can also get boring if the same person is doing it, and it feels like you are constantly having to manage it, rather than get on with playing the game. The artwork and components are great, and I'm sure that in the right group it would go better, but it didn't set my group alight. Whereas 'Geister Geister Schatsuchmeister' (German co-operative game, Kinderspiele of the year 2014) was an absolute blast and gets played again and again! My two cents... :0)

A follow up to Forbidden Island this time with a bit more going on within the game.

I really liked this and I certainly prefer it to the previous game as I felt that a little too light. This one is still light but there is a lot more going on and does provide a focus for the players to be running around the desert in the form of collecting parts to restore an ancient flying machine to escape death.

Everything works well together and does provide tension and encourage team work to escape your collective fates. Great game, would definitely play again and the components are of excellent quality.

A cooperative game from the designer and team that bought you Forbidden Island, this offering for 2-5 people offers just enough variation from its predecessor to make its acquisition worthwhile. A board of randomly placed tiles creates a desert to explore as each layer takes a specific role with its own set of special abilities. The game is simple: take 4 actions to move around the board, clear sand, find helpful objects and try to locate the missing parts to the plane. Then the sandstorm does its worst - tiles move, sand piles up burying parts of the desert whilst occasionally the sun beats down using up scare water or the storm gets more intense. Run out of water or get buried in sand and you lose - get the missing parts to the Steam Punk plane and fly away to victory and a cool lager. But everyone needs to get off - nobody gets left behind or we all lose. Compared to Forbidden Island the new mechanics are the moving board and the use of a coordinate system generated by the tiles to locate the pieces, replacing the set collection system of its predecessor. The tension comes from the water supply each player has and from the sand piling up. Coming in a metal tin case once again production values are good - although one of my sand tiles was damaged by some poorly placed sticky tape. A few bits of plastic create a pretty plane, pawns for the explorers and decent quality tiles and cards make it a sturdy production. All needed because most people will want to come back to this again and again in my humble opinion - the challenge coming due to the variety of roles and the setting of the difficulty level. So all in all, based on the amount of game time I anticipate getting out of this little gem, excellent value for money. Richard
