Nelma slipped the paddle into the black, dead water and pushed. The scrap raft slid silently into the Zone fog, so thick that it felt like floating into a white nothing. Nelma put her paddle into the water again. Victon, perched on the bow, suddenly raised his hand in warning. He had heard something. Thought that he had heard something. Nelma lifted the paddle - not really a paddle actually, it was just an old snow shovel from the ancient world - and listened intensely. Nothing. Then a huge shape appeared in the smog in front of the raft. Black and ancient. A gigantic metal tube, as long as the Ark was wide, one end lying entirely in water, the other on a stony beach. Nelma and Victon stared at the miracle, dumbstruck. None of them noticed the faint ripples in the water right next to their raft...
