You get a lot of bang in your box. 4 Expansions (each played separately) which will add a whole new lease of life to an already superb game. Each expansion is very different to the others and offer many levels of strategy on how to push yourself to victory. The Cities replaces the noble tiles with 3 different city tiles which become objectives, which you need to fulfil to win. The Trading Posts offers bonuses you earn by acquiring development cards. The Orient adds three decks of cards, one for each of the three levels of play. These offer bonuses such as extra resource, bonus yellow or free developments. The Strongholds expansion gives each player three strongholds which are used to reserve and buy extra development cards. Base game required to play.

The long-awaited expansion is here! There are 4 modules, each affecting the gameplay in different ways, some more subtly than others. My favourite is the Trading Post module in which players meet the requirements on the trading board and they then earn a special ability, and some of them are awesome! It can provide a distraction to the main tableau, but it's a lot of fun doing so! I also really like the Orient expansion which adds another tableau of cards, these can be purchased in the same way and many of them offer the buyer bonuses and special abilities. I like this because if you're sometimes stuck, the Orient cards can often offer you a solution, giving you wilds or the colours/abilities you need to achieve your goal. Cities is another module, and this simply replaces the Nobles and gives a slightly different focus as you need to 'win' one of the City tiles by meeting the displayed conditions. I've not played the Strongholds module, but I've been told it's the worst of the 4. In summary if you like Splendor and want a bit more variety in the game, I thoroughly recommend the expansion. You will need to ditch the insert to get it all in the original game box however...
