During the nineteenth century a web of steel was created around the world. Men, money, and vision built the railroads that made the modern world possible. Nowhere is this more evident than in the United States of America. The coming of the locomotive gave America the means to exploit her wealth of natural resource, transforming her into a world power. It is the construction of America's railroads that is reflected in Steel Driver.
The name refers to the Legend of John Henry. He was a steel driver, someone who hammered blasting holes in solid rock with sharp steel spikes.
In Steel Driver each player represents an investment broker, handling massive capital sums that were available in the nascent America railway companies. The players bid with investment cubes for control of railway companies. Control of these companies earns the players money. After the last of five game turns a special scoring phase takes place. Now the final value of each railway company is determined. The winner is the player with the most cash.

|This is a light train game yet has some deep strategy and tactics that such a light game surprises you with.
You have to balance short-term gain with long-term gain by collecting shares in companies, and building connections that will create value at the end of the game. The twist is that company control can change every turn as it is the the player who last bought shares in a company that controls it for that round - and there are only 5 rounds. Another nice twist is that the cash you earn from investing in a company are actually your victory points at games end and has no other use!
Another really good game from Martin Wallace, playable in 1 to 2 hours.
