Small World is a fun, zany, light-hearted civilization game in which 2-5 players vie for conquest and control of a board that is simply too small to accommodate them all! Picking the right combination of fantasy races and unique special powers, players must rush to expand their empires - often at the expense of weaker neighbours. Yet they must also know when to push their own over-extended civilization into decline to ride a new one to victory.

Vie for control of the world, but remember that space is limited and it's all about location, location, location...........well, that and an army..........or a dragon, yeah, dragons are good too. First play: I liked everything about this, the concept, the pieces, the artwork, the gameplay, it's all good. Later plays: This can be a real strategic thinker at times. If I go here then I might be spread too thinly to defend myself. Do I go into decline now, or wait another turn. How can I stop my opponents from collecting all that gold? A game I'm happy to play again and again!

Small World is a game about conquering areas, a bit like 'Risk', but with a fantasy theme. There are 14 races to choose from each with different abilities, and each race tries to conquer as much as they can, conquering the other races until they fall into decline and are replaced with other conquering races, all the while earning you victory points. What makes the game interesting is that each race has besides its own ability a random selection of 20 special abilities which affects the way that race conquers the land and what makes this game so much fun to play.

Unlike 'Risk' where a losing player has little chance to get back in the game, in Small World, because each race rises and falls to be replaced with another means that every player is constantly active as the balance of power is constantly changing.

The game is easy to play and a lot of fun to play as well. There are already two expansions which add more races and abilities which add even more variety to the game.

This is a really well designed game with a lot of beautiful pieces and different sized boards depending on the number of players. The game itself is really easy to pick up and play as the core mechanic is very simple -

2 tokens to conquer an empty region and 1 extra token for each token in an occupied area.

You choose from one of six race/ability combos stacked by the board, the first is free but each one you skip over to grab the one you want you have to place 1VP on. This combo determines how many tokens you get as well as what abilities and possibly bonuses you may have. Each turn you conquire areas then score VP's for each area you occupy plus any bonus VP's. Your VPS are kept hidden from other players. When you feel you have used up your combo you can put them into decline, they still score VP's but that is all you do that turn. All bar one of your tokens are removed from each area and the token turned over to the uncoloured side to show it is in decline, at the star of your next go you select a new combo. Play continues like this for several rounds, the number varies depending on player numbers.

At the end of the game the person with the most VP's wins. This game is just elegant in how it looks, plays and scales as the board size varies according to the number of players. There is a lot of humour in this game born out by some of the bizarre combos you can get, for example Bivouacking Ghouls.

There is a fair amount of carboard in this game and, I must say I think this is unique, no waste you use the carboard sheets left over from the punching to line the bottom of the box so when you place everythin back in the box it fits snugly stopping the tokens from moving around. They also supply a custom fit try to house all the race tokens which works really well.

A lot of thought has gone into this and its a joy to play and look at another worthy addition to the collection.
