Regaining their independence in 1919, Lithuania enjoyed only seven years of freedom before falling under dictatorial rule. In 1939, German and Soviet negotiators assigned Lithuania to the German sphere of influence in Eastern Europe, but when the Lihtuanians declined to participate in the German attack on Poland the agreement was revised to put the small Baltic nation in the Soviet sphere. In June 1940 the Soviets occupied Lithuania without resistance, and she would not regain her independence until 1991.
