|Sentinels of the Multiverse is the best comic-themed board game I know. There, I said it.
You choose a villain to fight, a place to fight in, and a hero for each player. The game is fully co-operative, with the villain and environment following the rules laid down on their respective cards... But there is a lot more subtle variety at play than may be apparent by just looking at the cards, and the mechanics of each hero, villain and environment are quite distinct, and mesh extremely well with the theme of each.
For example, one of the heroes, Tachyon, is is a speedster-style character, Sentinels' version of the Flash. She has a lot of ways to cycle through her deck, throwing cards away. But why would you want to? Because certain cards state they are "Burst", and using them represents Tachyon accelerating ever faster, with others cards having stronger effects the more Burst cards are in your trash. So playing as Tachyon feels completely different to other characters, and that same strong differentiation goes across the board, whether you're playing Bunker, in his transforming mech suit, trying to shut down the sentient robot factory Omnitron, or whether you're controlling minds as the Visionary, trying to get Citizen Dawn's usually close minions clawing at each other.
The game isn't perfect, with a lot of modifiers coming into play to keep track of, but that aside this is a fun, thematic game for 2-5 players (although very easy to play solo), and with some fantastic expansions available if you want more... And you probably will.
