Egizia, like games such as Stone Age, is essentially a worker placement game. Though, in this case, instead of people you are placing boats down a stylised Nile river valley! Played over 5 turns. the game flows swiftly and smoothly with little downtime. In each turn, the players place their boats on a series of fixed locations in order to acquire one of a wide range of beneficial cards, increase the size of their work force or have the opportunity to collect bonus cards, excavate graves or contribute to building obelisks, pyramids and temples. Most of these locations can be occupied by only one player's boat, resulting in frequent moments of tension and permanent anxiety as to which location to choose and what to do when someone has got there before you! A lovely touch is that you must always place one of your own boats further down the Nile than your last one. Each turn, the order of play depends on your current victory point total. Fewest points goes first - a simple balancing mechanism. Much of your scoring is open, but the hidden bonus cards that you have collected in the course of the game mean that the final winner is rarely certain until the very end.
