Cadwell BHR May 2023

With both bikes behaving, I decided to go to the Cadwell meeting. However, it clashed with the Burton Parade, a popular ride around Staffordshire and pleasant social event which I like to attend when possible. What to do? The solution was to go up to Cadwell on the Friday for signing on and scrutineering, race on the Saturday, then be back home Saturday night ready for the Parade on Sunday. Profligate use of diesel for the van, but with a saving on entry fees. One day would be enough to enjoy this splendid circuit and see if I was up to scratch.

Well, it was fun, with some good dices, but as at Mallory I was slower than I perhaps should have been. There is some excuse with the Morini as its engine has a lower compression than when I got my best results, making it a little slower but making it much easier to start, saving much aggravation if it stalls, which it is prone to doing until fully warmed up. In the last race it suddenly developed a gear change problem, losing me two places, then was OK again. I have since played around with the rather strange arrangement of the gear lever pivot, and think I have sussed what was going on. I will find out if I am right next time out…

On the Cub I had a particularly enjoyable time with a Bantam of nearly identical performance. I just finished a head in both races; he will have been hoping for revenge on Sunday, so I felt guilty about not being there. Hopefully he will be there at Darley Moor in July.
